What is Zabiha Halal? A Complete Guide

By Gyro 9 Team·August 2026·6 min read

Definition

Zabiha Halal (Arabic: ذبيحة حلال) refers to meat that has been slaughtered according to Islamic law. The animal must be alive and healthy at slaughter, killed by a trained Muslim who invokes the name of Allah (bismillah), with the carotid artery swiftly cut and all blood fully drained. This method ensures both religious compliance and humane treatment of the animal.

The 5 Requirements of Zabiha Slaughter

1
The slaughterer must be Muslim

A trained, sane, adult Muslim must perform the slaughter. Non-Muslims may not perform Zabiha slaughter.

2
Bismillah must be recited

The name of Allah (bismillah, Allahu Akbar) must be invoked at the time of slaughter — not recorded or played mechanically.

3
The animal must be alive and healthy

Animals that are already dead, diseased, or severely injured before slaughter are not permissible (haram).

4
The carotid artery, jugular vein, and windpipe must be cut

A swift, single cut of a sharp blade across the throat to sever these vessels. The spinal cord must not be severed first.

5
All blood must be drained

The carcass must be allowed to fully drain of blood before processing. Consuming blood is forbidden in Islam.

Halal vs Zabiha Halal — What's the Difference?

This is a common question in Muslim communities. All Zabiha is Halal, but not all Halal is Zabiha.
